Spring Breaks

I was intrigued by New York City-based photographer Sarra Fleur Abou-El-Haj’s name when she contacted me about freelancing for us. Lucky for me, her photography is as beautiful and evocative as her name, as evidenced by this beauty editorial, shot in New York City featuring the always-divine Lu Dan. It’s no wonder that this is one of my all-time favorite editorials.

Sarra’s editorial came out so beautifully that the rest of the staff took it upon themselves to place the printouts all around my office, in the hopes of getting me to change my mind about this issue’s cover. However, I had already arranged to feature CNN weekend anchor and White House correspondent Elaine Quijano on the cover of our fourth anniversary issue.

So Fresh and So Green

This feature was published in the April/May 2007 Fourth Anniversary Issue of Audrey Magazine. It came about during an editorial meeting at a time when the “eco” movement was really starting to take off. We wondered how Asian Americans were getting involved in this issue. I assigned this story to regular freelance writer Audrey Shiomi (no relation to the name of the magazine), who suggested we tighten the focus to young Asian Americans. The result? A feature with tons of energy and a fresh take on the movement to go green.

Danny Seo (above left) couldn’t be a more adorable ambassador of the young “green” set.
